Most vocabulary cards pair a word with its translation, which trains you to translate. Put a picture on the back instead and "le chat" starts to mean the animal, not the English word for it.
Four ways to study vocabulary
Use a picture instead of a translation
Write the word on the front, click Create visual, and Interact draws a simple sketch for the back. It works best for things you can see: animals, food, objects, everyday actions.
Visual flashcardsPractice both directions
Reading a word and producing it are separate skills. Check Create reverse card and you get a second card that shows the picture and asks for the word.
Flashcards in lessonsPut words in sentences
A fill-in-the-blank exercise hides one word of a sentence. You practice the word where it's used, with the grammar around it.
Fill in the blanksType it to learn the spelling
Accents and endings are easy to recognize and hard to produce. A typed answer exercise makes you write the word out.
Type the answer
Use the material you already have
A class vocabulary list, a textbook chapter, or a video in the language you're learning can all become cards. Paste your notes, upload a PDF, or paste a YouTube link.
Reviews are scheduled with spaced repetition, so a word you know well comes back less often and a word you keep missing comes back sooner.
Start with a prompt
The Describe option on the Create page turns a sentence into a set of interactives. This one is a reasonable first set. Change it to match what you're studying.
5 flashcards of common French food words. Put the French word with its article on the front and a picture of the food on the back instead of a translation.
Common questions
Which languages does it work for?
Any language you can type. The cards are yours to write, and a picture has no language.
What about abstract words?
Words like "although" don't draw well. Use a sentence with a blank for those, and keep pictures for concrete words.
Can I study on my phone?
Yes. The iPhone and iPad apps play the same lessons, and your cards stay in sync with the web.
Is it free?
Making cards by hand is unlimited on every plan. Each drawn picture counts as one AI generation, and the free plan includes 10 a month.
